Neal) Allen, 81, of Windsor, beloved wife of Ernest "Bill" Allen for 60 years, passed away, Saturday, March 25, 2017.Born in Hartford, daughter of the late Ralph and Gertrude Neal, she graduated from Bates College with a degree in Sociology in 1957. She was employed by the State of Maine for several years until moving to Windsor with her newly retired Air Force veteran husband, Bill, in 1972. She was then employed until retirement as food service supervisor for the Windsor Public Schools. She was a former member of the Poquonock Community Church where she was active on numerous boards and commissions and currently a member of the First Church in Windsor. She was a member of the Windsor Jesters working on costumes and backstage for many years. She also enjoyed her membership in the Red Hat Society. Besides her husband Bill, she leaves a son Neal W. Allen of East Hartford, a grandson Brady W. Allen of Willington; and her longtime aide and caregiver Vanessa Benard. Her family will receive friends Thursday, March 30, 2017 from 10-11 am at the First Church in Windsor, 107 Palisado Avenue, Windsor followed by a Funeral Service at 11am. The Rev. Nicole Grant Yonkman will officiate. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Contributions may be made to the First Church in Windsor. Lacy E. Cochran - Hampshire Review

Cochran, 95, of Mathias, went quietly into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Sentara RMH in Harrisonburg.Born on June 15, 1921 in Greenbrier County, he was the oldest son of the late David F. and Ada Hankins Cochran.He is preceded in death by 1 son, David; 2 brothers, Joseph and Edward; and 2 sisters, Edith and Glenna.He had a remarkable life growing up in the Depression on a Greenbrier County farm. Inspired by an agriculture teacher, he became the first of his family to attend college. He started at Berea College in Berea, Ky. in 1939.He left school in 1941 to work in the war industry in Baltimore; after being drafted in 1943 he served in the United States Army Chemical Corps, including 21 months in Great Britain. He was discharged as a Master Sergeant in January 1946 and returned to Berea. He met his wife Florence at the college and they were married on July 21, 1946.After graduation in 1947 he took his first teaching job in Greenbrier County in 1947, and moved to Moorefield High School in January 1948. In 1952 he became the vocational agriculture and shop teacher at Mathias High School.He was named an Honorary State Farmer and Honorary American Farmer in recognition of the success of his students with FFA. He also taught adult farmer education programs and became director of vocational education in Hardy County in 1975. After retiring in 1986, he managed the East Hardy High Scholarship Fund, which he helped establish.He received a master’s degree in agriculture education from West Virginia University in 1954. He was a member of the Mathias Ruritan Club, earning a 50-year-plus perfect attendance record, 2 terms as president, 1 year as West Virginia District Governor, and “Ruritan of the Year.” He attended Cove Chapel United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School for over 50 years. Irwin Garsten, longtime Riverhead car dealer, dies at 86 - Riverhead News Review

He was 86.Mr. Garsten of Shoreham opened Garsten Motors in 1959, which became Apple Honda in 1996.He won Time Magazine’s Quality Dealer Award in 2006, an honor given annually to successful car dealers in the nation who also demonstrate long-standing commitment to effective community service.In an interview Wednesday, Linda Hulse, assistant to Apple Honda’s general manager, described Mr. Garsten’s death as sudden.“We were getting emails from him last night and were waiting for him to come back for the opening of the new showroom,” she said. “He’s missed very much.”Mr. Garsten was a member of many local organizations, including the Riverhead Rotary Club, Riverhead Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America, Eastern Long Island United Way and Peconic Bay Medical Center Foundation.“You can be a great dealer and not bring to the table what Irwin does,” Riverhead Town Justice Allen Smith told the News-Review in a 2006 profile of Mr. Garsten. “He’s beyond being someone who simply sells cars.”The family will receive visitors at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead Saturday, Feb. 11, from 1 to 4 p.m.Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, at Temple Israel in Riverhead.
